Woman bitten by monkey in Sector 22-B
Chandigarh, September 12, 2026: A woman was injured after being attacked and bitten by a monkey in Sector 22-B, Chandigarh, on Saturday, raising fresh concerns among residents over increasing monkey activity in residential areas. The monkey reportedly bit the woman at three places on her leg. She later received medical treatment and injections.
Residents concerned over rising monkey activity
Local residents claimed that at least four people have so far been bitten by monkeys in the city. They said groups of monkeys are frequently seen on rooftops, inside houses and on streets, creating particular concern for children and elderly residents. Some residents have resorted to placing langur cut-outs on rooftops in an attempt to keep monkeys away. Locals said monkeys often approach or chase people carrying food.
Residents of Sector 22-B said temporary measures would not provide a permanent solution. They urged the Municipal Corporation to identify areas from where monkey groups enter residential neighbourhoods and establish an effective system for their safe capture and relocation.
Residents call for better waste management
Residents also stressed the need for stricter monitoring of food waste and other edible items left in the open, saying such material could attract monkeys to residential areas.
Meanwhile, the Chandigarh Administration has advised residents not to feed or provoke monkeys and not to block their path.
The guidelines also advise people to avoid direct eye contact with monkeys and not approach their young ones.
