Chandigarh, August 19: Two people have been arrested for allegedly murdering a vegetable seller following a dispute over vehicle parking and the loading and unloading of goods at the Sector 26 grain market in Chandigarh. A juvenile allegedly involved in the crime has also been detained, police said.
The accused, Vinod Kumar, 52, and his son Priyanshu, 22, residents of Gas Colony in Dariya, were apprehended on August 17. Following their disclosure, a juvenile was detained on August 18. Police have also recovered the weapon allegedly used in the crime.
According to police, the incident took place on August 14, when a quarrel broke out between the accused and the victim, Desraj, a native of Una in Himachal Pradesh. The dispute reportedly started over vehicle parking and the loading and unloading of vehicles in the grain market.
During the altercation, one of the accused allegedly restrained Desraj while another allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the chest. Desraj was subsequently taken for treatment but succumbed to his injuries.
Police said Priyanshu, a Class 12 pass-out, works with his father at the grain market and has no previous criminal record. Vinod, a Class 10 pass-out, works as a wholesale commission agent and also has no previous criminal history, according to officials.
Police teams from the Sector 26 and Industrial Area police stations were formed to trace the accused and investigate the case. The teams were headed by Inspector Satnam Singh, officiating SHO of the Sector 26 police station.
The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected as police continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal dispute.
