Chandigarh to Get a New Tourist Spot as 35-Acre City Forest Gets Approval
Chandigarh, Oct 10,2026: Chandigarh is set to get a new green destination with the administration approving a 35-acre city forest project worth ₹13.72 crore in the Sukhna Choe Reserve Forest area near Industrial Area Phase II. The project budget was approved by a committee chaired by Chief Secretary H. Rajesh Prasad. The proposed city forest aims to promote eco-tourism, environmental awareness and biodiversity while offering recreational facilities to residents and visitors.
Planned facilities include a 100-seat auditorium, open-air theatre, nature interpretation centre, birdwatching tower and cycling track. The project will also focus on improving the area's landscape and encouraging people to learn about nature and environmental conservation.
Engineering Department to Handle Construction
The project will be developed as a deposit work for the Forest Department, while the Engineering Department will be responsible for construction. The landscape plan has been prepared, and construction is expected to begin soon. The administration aims to complete the project within one year after the tender is awarded. Environment-friendly materials will be prioritised to minimise damage to the natural surroundings.
Focus on Ecological Restoration
According to the project details, the plan is linked to land cleared in 2022 in the Sukhna Choe downstream area near Colony No. 4 in Industrial Area Phase I. The city forest will prioritise rainwater conservation, protection of natural habitats, biodiversity enhancement and ecological restoration. The objective is to improve the area's green cover while creating a space for recreation and environmental education.
