Chandigarh to Open Government School Grounds for Parking During Festive Rush

The Chandigarh Traffic Police has planned temporary parking at government school grounds and one-way traffic arrangements to manage congestion as shoppers head to markets during the festive season. The measures will cover major shopping areas, including Sector 15, Sector 17 Plaza, Sector 18, Sector 19 Palika Bazar, Sector 22 Jewellery and Shastri Market, Sector 26 Grain Market, and markets in Sectors 32, 35 and 46. Elante Mall, Manimajra NAC, Ram Darbar and the Industrial Area are also included.

School Grounds Identified for Parking

Government school grounds in Sectors 7, 8, 10, 11, 15, 18, 19, 20, 22, 34, 35, 38, 45 and 46, along with locations in Ram Darbar and the Industrial Area, have been identified for temporary parking. Other vacant spaces near busy markets may also be used after permission. Officials said the final list of school grounds available for parking would be released after confirmation from the concerned departments. Signboards will guide motorists to designated parking areas.

One-Way Traffic and Strict Action Against Wrong Parking

Special one-way arrangements are planned at congested markets to improve traffic movement and maintain emergency access. Additional personnel will be deployed at busy locations, including Sectors 17, 19, 22 and 34, the Industrial Area and Ram Darbar. The police will coordinate with market associations, improve real-time traffic management and take strict action against wrong parking and encroachments. The arrangements will be introduced in phases ahead of the main festive rush, expected to begin around Karwa Chauth, and continue through the peak period.
