Former Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi Sits for MA Exam at Panjab University, Continues Academic Journey Alongside Politics
CHANDIGARH: Former Punjab Chief Minister and Congress Lok Sabha MP Charanjit Singh Channi spent Thursday morning in an examination hall at Panjab University, appearing for a master’s paper in Public Administration.
At 63, Channi is continuing his academic journey while remaining active in politics. His examination kept him away from a key Congress Working Committee meeting in Delhi, held ahead of the high-stakes Punjab Assembly elections expected early next year.
For a politician whose career has largely revolved around government and party organisations, Channi’s academic pursuits have become a notable part of his public life.
From Political Science PhD to Public Administration MA
Channi completed his PhD in Political Science from Panjab University in 2023. His doctoral research focused on the Congress organisation and its electoral strategies during the Lok Sabha elections between 2004 and 2019.
His research also examined organisational challenges and election strategies in states including Punjab and Rajasthan.
The subject had a direct connection with Channi’s own political career. He had risen through the Congress ranks, served as a legislator and minister, and eventually became Punjab Chief Minister.
His academic work also progressed during a period when his political career faced a significant setback. Despite the demands of active politics, Channi continued to pursue higher education.
A Politician Back in the Classroom
Thursday’s examination presented a different picture of the former chief minister — a sitting Lok Sabha MP spending his morning among university students and appearing for an examination.
His current MA course in Public Administration adds another chapter to an academic record that has developed alongside his political career.
Channi’s continued interest in academics stands out in Indian politics, where active politicians often balance electoral responsibilities with public and organisational commitments. For the former Punjab CM, the university classroom remains a familiar space even as he continues his political journey.
