Delhi Plans 50,000 New CCTV Cameras, Smart Streetlights with Automatic Fault Detection
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has proposed installing 50,000 new CCTV cameras across the capital alongside smart streetlights designed to detect faults automatically and support faster repairs. The proposals were discussed during an interaction with elected student representatives from Delhi University colleges, who raised concerns about CCTV coverage and street lighting in the city.
AMC to Ensure CCTV Maintenance
Gupta said the proposed cameras would be covered under Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMCs) to ensure regular servicing and reduce the risk of cameras remaining non-functional because of delayed repairs. The maintenance arrangements are intended to improve the reliability of CCTV infrastructure across Delhi.
Smart Streetlights to Detect Faults
The proposed streetlights would be connected to an Integrated Command and Control System capable of automatically identifying faults. Contractors would be responsible for repairing faulty lights under AMC agreements. The measures aim to strengthen monitoring and ensure quicker repairs of streetlights across the capital.
Rekha Gupta Criticises Opposition
During the interaction, Gupta also criticised Rahul Gandhi and the opposition over their political approach. Responding to a question about allegations that a female journalist was mistreated during a protest involving Gandhi and later admitted to hospital, Gupta accused the opposition of prioritising political ambitions over public interest. She alleged that opposition leaders were disregarding the concerns of party workers, citizens, journalists and police personnel. These remarks were Gupta’s allegations.
