Education Ministry Approves Five Centres of Excellence for Classical Languages
New Delhi: The Ministry of Education has approved the establishment of five Centres of Excellence dedicated to the study, research and preservation of India’s Classical Languages. The initiative has been approved by the Department of Higher Education with a focus on Classical Assamese, Classical Bengali, Classical Marathi, Classical Pali and Classical Prakrit.The five Centres of Excellence will be established at Tezpur University in Assam, Visva-Bharati University in West Bengal, Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute in Pune, Central University of Odisha and Central University of Gujarat.The initiative aims to create dedicated institutional support for advanced academic research in these languages. The centres will also focus on preserving and digitising linguistic and literary heritage, helping ensure that important manuscripts, texts and knowledge traditions are protected and made accessible for future generations.
The centres are expected to provide an academic platform for scholars and researchers working on the history, literature, linguistics and cultural traditions associated with these Classical Languages. They will also contribute to wider dissemination of research and knowledge through academic activities and digital resources.The establishment of the five Centres of Excellence marks a significant step towards strengthening India’s institutional ecosystem for the study and preservation of its rich linguistic heritage. The move is expected to encourage further research and create greater academic interest in languages that have played an important role in the country’s literary and cultural history.
