Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Monday accused the opposition of indulging in “vulture politics” by using every unfortunate incident to target the state government.
Addressing a press conference, Mann said the government was taking strong action against drugs, gangsters and organised crime, while the opposition should focus on presenting a clear vision for Punjab instead of creating controversies.
Mann highlights action against gangsters
The Chief Minister said Punjab has brought back gangsters from foreign countries and continued action against criminal networks. He claimed that since 2022, the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) has arrested around 1.24 lakh gangsters and their sympathisers.
According to Mann, the Punjab Police has also recovered weapons, hand grenades, heroin, opium, gold and cash during the crackdown. He said 18 gangsters have been deported from other countries.
Mann also claimed that around 80% of the drugs entering Punjab from Pakistan had been eliminated following the government’s action.
Attack on BJP over drug smuggling
Mann directly targeted the BJP over drug smuggling and questioned the availability of large drug consignments in BJP-ruled states.
Referring to Mundra Port in Gujarat, he claimed that Punjab Police had recovered a major drug consignment linked to the port. He also said the Centre has the primary responsibility for stopping smuggling across the international border, while Punjab has installed anti-drone systems using its own funds.
The Chief Minister alleged that around 3,000 kg of drugs had earlier been seized at Mundra Port and questioned why stronger action had not followed.
Opposition accused of politicising incidents
Mann also targeted the Congress and Akali Dal, alleging that criminal elements had received political patronage during previous governments.
He said people want solutions rather than political controversies and urged opposition parties to contribute constructively on issues affecting Punjab.
The Chief Minister reiterated that his government would continue its campaign against drugs and organised crime. He said the focus would remain on breaking criminal networks, disrupting drug supply chains and protecting Punjab’s youth.
Mann also raised issues including river waters, the state’s capital, Panjab University, farm laws and BBMB, saying Punjab deserves a special package.
He said the government would remain focused on making Punjab safer, drug-free and prosperous.
