Gurugram to Get 100 Rainwater Recharge Structures Before 2027 Monsoon

Haryana plans 100 rainwater recharge structures in Gurugram before the 2027 monsoon to reduce waterlogging and recharge 25–30 crore litres underground.

Gurugram: The Haryana government plans to install 100 new rainwater recharge structures in Gurugram before the 2027 monsoon, with the project expected to push an estimated 25 to 30 crore litres of rainwater into the ground.

The initiative is aimed at tackling the city’s recurring waterlogging problem while simultaneously improving groundwater recharge. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced the plan after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Thursday, where he briefed him on measures being taken to address waterlogging following heavy rainfall in Gurugram this month.

IIT Delhi to Support Rainwater Harvesting Plan

The state government is working with IIT Delhi on the rainwater harvesting programme. The proposed structures will be designed to capture excess rainwater and channel it into the ground rather than allowing large volumes of runoff to accumulate on roads and residential areas.

The programme is part of a broader water management strategy that includes check dams in the Aravalli foothills, water harvesting wells, restoration of ponds and water bodies, and technology-based monitoring of drainage-related work.

Water Harvesting Wells at 99 Waterlogging Points

The government has identified 99 waterlogging points across Gurugram. Water harvesting wells have already been installed at most of these locations. Officials have reported that around 13,000 metric tonnes of rainwater has been recharged through the system so far.

The administration has also undertaken camera-monitored desilting of drains. Work has been carried out on the drain near Hero Honda Chowk, while the Lag 1, Lag 2 and Lag 3 drains have been cleaned following the removal of encroachments. Work is also underway to revive Lag 4.

Check Dams Being Used to Control Runoff

The government is also focusing on the Aravalli foothills to control the flow of rainwater before it reaches urban areas.

Check dams have been constructed to slow down runoff and reduce pressure on Gurugram’s drainage network. Officials have also restored 74 old ponds and water bodies as part of the wider water management effort.

Route to Divert Excess Water Towards Yamuna Under Study

For a longer-term solution, Japanese consultancy Nippon Koei is conducting a survey to explore a possible route for diverting excess water from low-lying areas of Gurugram towards the Yamuna through Nuh.

If developed, the proposed system could provide an additional route for excess rainwater to leave vulnerable parts of the city instead of accumulating on roads and in residential neighbourhoods.

Pilot Project Tested in Gurugram

Gurugram has also been testing rainwater harvesting technology through a pilot project. According to a recent GMDA update, five rainwater harvesting systems were being tested with flowmeters installed to measure their actual performance.

During rainfall on August 7, 2026, the system installed in Sector 31 reportedly recharged around 7.20 lakh litres of rainwater into the ground.

Data collected through the flowmeters will be used to assess the capacity and performance of the systems before their wider implementation.

Underground Rainwater Storage System Also Under Consideration

Separately, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram and Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority are examining underground rainwater storage and groundwater recharge systems with technical experts from IIT Gandhinagar.

The proposed system could involve high-capacity underground tanks and injection wells to store excess rainwater during heavy rainfall and recharge groundwater. Officials are examining injection wells with capacities ranging from 48 to 80 litres per second, along with SCADA-based monitoring.

Focus on Waterlogging and Groundwater Recharge

The latest plan follows intense rainfall and widespread waterlogging in Gurugram this month. The city received around 230 mm of rain between August 6 and 8, followed by another intense spell on August 24.

According to the government, improved drainage helped clear waterlogging within around two hours during the latest spell.

The proposed 100 recharge structures are therefore intended to address two concerns at the same time — reducing surface water accumulation during heavy rainfall and increasing groundwater recharge.

If implemented before the 2027 monsoon as planned, the programme could significantly expand Gurugram’s rainwater storage and groundwater recharge capacity.
