Haryana to Convert 466 Old Water Works into RCC Structures
Chandigarh, August 25, 2026: Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has directed officials to convert old water works where groundwater mixing is affecting drinking water quality into reinforced cement concrete (RCC)-based structures.
The Chief Minister also directed officials to prioritise the conversion of tubewell-based water works into canal-based water supply systems wherever feasible.
The directions were issued during a meeting with officials of the Public Health Engineering Department to review the status of water works and drinking water supply across Haryana. Public Health Engineering Minister Ranbir Singh Gangwa was also present.
466 Water Works to Be Converted
Principal Secretary of the department Pankaj Yadav informed the meeting that Haryana currently has 1,888 canal-based water works and 4,199 boosting stations in operation.
The state is also using 12,404 tubewells and five Ranney Well schemes for water supply. Of these, 3,674 tubewells have already been handed over to the respective Gram Panchayats.
The department is also working on 103 new canal-based water works, 1,065 new tubewells, 369 new boosting stations and two new Ranney Wells.
Officials said 466 brick-built water works are being converted into RCC-based structures at an estimated cost of around ₹1,000 crore.
1,525 Km of Pipelines to Be Replaced
Haryana has a water distribution network spanning around 7,005 km. Of this, 1,525 km of pipelines are planned to be replaced, with 837 km targeted for replacement by March 2027.
Focus on Drinking Water Quality
Nayab Singh Saini said providing safe drinking water to the people of Haryana remains a priority for the state government.
He said water works where groundwater mixes with stored water can lead to higher levels of TDS, hardness and fluoride. Treating such water to make it suitable for drinking puts additional pressure on the machinery at water works, making the conversion to RCC-based structures necessary.
The Chief Minister directed that adequate funds be made available to ensure an uninterrupted supply of safe drinking water across the state.
He also directed officials to plan the capacity of new water works according to the growing population.
Government Efforts to Improve Groundwater Levels
The Chief Minister said measures being undertaken by the government are expected to improve groundwater levels in the coming years.
He said these efforts would help check the decline in groundwater levels as well as improve water quality.
According to Saini, the quality of Yamuna water flowing from Haryana towards Delhi has also improved following the establishment of treatment plants.
