PM-SETU Completes One Year, Aims to Modernise Government ITIs
New Delhi: The Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded ITIs (PM-SETU) has completed one year. Launched by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship on October 4 last year, the scheme aims to modernise Government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and make vocational training more aligned with industry requirements.
PM-SETU focuses on strengthening industry-led governance, upgrading training infrastructure and introducing demand-driven courses based on changing workforce needs. The initiative seeks to improve the quality and relevance of vocational education by transforming government ITIs into modern, industry-aligned training institutions.
The scheme has a total outlay of more than ₹60,000 crore, including ₹30,000 crore from the Centre, ₹20,000 crore from States and ₹10,000 crore from industry.ITIs play an important role in equipping young people with practical skills for employment and industry. Under the Craftsmen Training Scheme, training is offered through government and private ITIs in engineering and non-engineering trades, with course durations ranging from six months to two years.The number of government and private ITIs in the country has increased to more than 13,000 in 2026 from over 9,000 in 2014, marking a 42 percent rise. ITI enrolment has also increased from 9.51 lakh in 2014-15 to 14.70 lakh in 2025-26, a growth of 54 percent.A National Steering Committee has been constituted to provide overall direction to PM-SETU. So far, 850 ITIs have been identified, comprising 172 Hub ITIs and 678 Spoke ITIs.The committee has also approved the transition of PM-SETU from its pilot phase to a nationwide rollout covering all 200 identified ITI clusters. Strategic Investment Plans for 14 clusters have also been approved, involving an investment of more than ₹3,446 crore.
