Punjab Police Bust Arms Smuggling Network, Two Held With 10 Pistols in Amritsar
Chandigarh/Amritsar, August 23: Punjab Police’s Counter Intelligence (CI) Amritsar has busted an alleged illegal arms smuggling network with the arrest of two men and the recovery of 10 sophisticated pistols, magazines and 10 live cartridges, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav said on Sunday.
The arrested accused have been identified as Gurpreet Singh, son of Iqbal Singh, and Gurpreet Singh, son of Gulzar Singh, both residents of village Hawellian in Tarn Taran.
Nine 9mm Pistols and One .30 Bore Weapon Recovered
According to the police, the recovered weapons include nine 9mm pistols and one .30 bore pistol, along with magazines and 10 live cartridges.
Police also impounded a grey-coloured Bajaj Platina motorcycle bearing registration number PB-38-C-1658, which was allegedly being used to transport the arms consignments.
Foreign-Based Handler Under Probe
DGP Gaurav Yadav said the preliminary investigation has indicated that the accused were allegedly in contact with a foreign-based handler and were receiving illegal arms consignments from across the border for further supply to other parties in Punjab.
The DGP said the investigation is being expanded to establish the wider network and identify those allegedly involved in the supply chain.
Police Acting on Specific Input
According to the police, CI Amritsar teams received information that the two suspects had allegedly received arms consignments through drones near the Indo-Pak border fencing in the area of village Hawellian.
The consignments were allegedly received on the instructions of their foreign-based handler and were to be delivered to another party.
Acting on the information, police teams intercepted and arrested both suspects near village Khasa on the Amritsar-Attari GT Road.
The 10 pistols, magazines and live cartridges were subsequently recovered, police said.
Probe Underway to Identify Wider Network
DGP Gaurav Yadav said further investigation is underway to establish the complete forward and backward linkages in the case.
Investigators are also working to identify other alleged accomplices and uncover the wider cross-border arms smuggling network.
A case has been registered as FIR No. 51 dated August 22, 2026, under Sections 25, 25(1)(A) and 25(8) of the Arms Act and Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Police Station State Special Operation Cell, Amritsar.
