Punjab Youth Alleges Police Torture After Protesting CM Mann in Sunam
Sunam: Mohanjit Singh, the Sikh youth who protested during Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s programme in Sheron village, Sunam, has levelled serious allegations against the Punjab Police.
Speaking from hospital, where he is undergoing treatment, Singh alleged that he was assaulted and subsequently tortured after he raised a protest during the Chief Minister’s programme.
‘Beaten First, Then Tortured in Police Station’
According to Singh’s account, he wanted to question the Chief Minister about action against drugs in Punjab. He said he later climbed onto the roof of his house and peacefully protested by displaying a black flag.
Singh alleged that police personnel caught him and took him to a nearby structure, where he was allegedly beaten. He further claimed that he was taken to a police station and subjected to further torture.
Allegations of Injuries and Salt on Wounds
Singh also alleged that he was injured with a blade and that salt was applied to his wounds during the alleged torture. He further claimed that police personnel recorded and shared videos of him.
These allegations have been made by Mohanjit Singh and have not been independently verified in this report.
Matter Reaches Human Rights Commission
The incident has also drawn criticism from the acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, who has reportedly sought action against the police personnel allegedly involved.
The matter has also reportedly reached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). A formal response from the Punjab Police on the allegations is awaited.
