Who was Manjeet Kaur?
Chandigarh, August 29: Punjabi social media influencer Manjeet Kaur, 28, died at PGIMER, Chandigarh, on August 26 while undergoing treatment, nearly two months after an alleged assault in Morinda left her critically injured.
Kaur, who hailed from Kharar, had built a significant following on social media. She had around 1.46 lakh followers on Instagram and nearly 4,000 subscribers on YouTube.
Her social media content included reels promoting cosmetic products as well as videos featuring popular Punjabi and Haryanvi songs.
She is survived by her seven-year-old son.
What allegedly happened to Manjeet Kaur?
According to a complaint filed by her mother, Kanta Devi, the incident took place on July 3.
The complaint alleges that two acquaintances, identified as Shubhi and Pinda, called Kaur to a location near a liquor shop in Chandigarh’s Sector 34.
They allegedly took her in a car to Morinda, where she was assaulted, tied to a mulberry tree and allegedly set on fire.
A friend reportedly reached the spot and found Kaur engulfed in flames. The friend used a blanket to extinguish the fire before Kaur was taken to a hospital in Morinda.
She was later shifted to Max Hospital in Mohali and subsequently referred to PGIMER, Chandigarh, where she was admitted on July 9.
Family says she wanted to give police statement
Kaur reportedly regained consciousness on August 5.
Her family alleged that she wanted to provide a statement to police after regaining consciousness but claimed that no police officer reached the hospital at that time.
She died during treatment on August 26.
Family alleges police negligence
Kaur’s mother accused Kharar Sadar Police of failing to record her daughter’s statement when she was conscious.
The family said her statement could have provided important leads in the investigation. A daily diary entry was reportedly made at the PGI police post in connection with the matter.
However, Kharar DSP Ishan Singla denied allegations of police inaction.
He said the alleged place of occurrence falls under Chandigarh Police jurisdiction and that Kharar Police assisted Kaur’s mother by taking her to the concerned police station and facilitating registration of the FIR.
Chandigarh Police register kidnapping and murder case
Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur confirmed that a case was registered on the complaint of Kaur’s mother.
The FIR at Sector 34 police station includes provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to kidnapping, murder and joint criminal liability.
Police said they had obtained clues about the suspects and were conducting raids to arrest them.
CCTV footage and evidence being examined
Investigators are examining CCTV footage and other evidence along the route from Sector 34 to Morinda.
Police are also questioning people known to Kaur to establish the sequence of events and determine the possible motive behind the alleged attack.
The allegations made by Kaur’s family have not been established in court. The exact circumstances surrounding her death and the motive behind the alleged incident remain under investigation.
