Beijing, August 21, 2026: At least 159 people have died and 10 others remain missing following Storm Measak, which struck China more than a month ago, according to local media reports on Friday.
The storm brought heavy rainfall to southwestern Guangxi province in early July, triggering severe flooding across several areas. Nanning and Guigang were among the worst-hit cities.
At the time, authorities had reported 39 deaths. However, updated figures released more than a month after the storm now put the death toll at 159.
According to state media, 107 of the total deaths occurred in Nanning due to flooding caused by the collapse of six dams. The dam failures resulted in a massive surge of water, causing widespread destruction in affected areas.
It is not unusual for authorities to revise casualty figures several days after a major natural disaster. However, the latest update in this case came more than a month after the storm, marking a significant increase in the reported death toll.
Relief and rescue operations, along with efforts to locate those still missing, continue in the affected areas.
