Baghdad, August 22, 2026: Iran has granted permission for a number of Iraqi oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz following repeated requests from Baghdad, Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported on Saturday.
According to IRNA, securing special permission for Iraqi oil tankers was one of the key requests made by Baghdad during Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf’s visit to Iraq.
Iraqi President Nizar Amedi said on Saturday that Iran had facilitated the passage of vessels carrying Iraqi oil through the Strait in recent days. He added that Baghdad had also discussed the possibility of exporting Iraqi oil through the Strait of Hormuz with Iranian officials.
Speaking at the Baghdad Dialogue policy conference, Amedi said the issue remained complicated despite the recent facilitation of tanker movements.
Iraq has been among the countries most affected by the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Shipping traffic through the strategic waterway remains significantly below pre-war levels, while vessels operating in the area continue to face security threats and attacks.
Before the outbreak of the Iran war, Iraq was producing around 4 million barrels of oil per day, making uninterrupted export routes crucial for the country’s economy.
Meanwhile, Baghdad is working to diversify its oil export routes. Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi said on Friday that Iraq was seeking to expand exports through Turkey’s Ceyhan port and begin exporting crude through Syria’s Baniyas port and Jordan’s Aqaba port.
The developments come as Iraq seeks to maintain the flow of its vital oil exports amid continued uncertainty and security concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
