Iran: Mojtaba Khamenei not seen in Late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s funeral prayers

By NewsWave Desk05 Jul 2026, 10:54 am181 views

Iran held funeral prayers in Tehran for former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, attended by the country's top political, military and religious leaders, while the absence of his successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, drew attention ahead of the burial in Mashhad.

Iran’s political, military and religious leadership gathered in Tehran today for the funeral prayers of former Supreme Leader Late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

State television showed Khamenei’s three sons, Masoud, Meysam and Mostafa leading funeral prayers at Grand Mosalla in Tehran alongside President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and senior commanders. However, there was no sign of his successor, Mojtaba Khamenei.

The country’s new supreme leader has not appeared in public since the airstrikes by Israel and the United States killed his father, several family members and other senior Iranian officials on 28th of February. Mojtaba Khamenei succeeded his father but his absence from the public eye has prompted questions about the whereabouts of Iran’s new leader.

The funeral procession of the former Supreme Leader will continue over the next few days before concluding with his burial in the holy city of Mashhad on the 9th of this month. Public mourning will continue for 40 days thereafter
