UN Welcomes India’s Green Energy Corridor Phase-III, Calls It Major Step for Clean Energy
The United Nations has welcomed India’s approval of the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III (GEC-III), describing the ₹1.86 lakh crore initiative as an important step towards strengthening the country’s renewable energy infrastructure.UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell said the scheme could deliver significant benefits for India’s people and economy by helping the country make better use of its rapidly growing renewable energy capacity. He said stronger transmission infrastructure would enable India to integrate more renewable power into its electricity system while meeting rising energy demand.Stiell also highlighted the importance of battery energy storage systems for a large and rapidly developing economy such as India. According to him, grid strengthening combined with battery storage can play an important role in improving energy security and supporting economic growth as countries move towards cleaner energy sources. The UN official further noted that investments in stronger electricity grids, manufacturing and battery storage could create employment opportunities across several sectors, including construction, manufacturing and energy storage. The Union Cabinet has approved GEC-III with a total financial outlay of ₹1,86,405 crore. The project includes ₹54,082 crore in Central Financial Assistance. The third phase of the Green Energy Corridor is aimed at strengthening intra-State transmission systems and supporting the deployment of Battery Energy Storage Systems. The initiative is expected to improve the ability of power networks to absorb electricity generated from renewable sources, particularly solar and wind energy. The UN’s appreciation comes as India continues to expand its renewable energy capacity and develop infrastructure needed to support the country’s clean-energy transition.
