Abhinandan Varthaman Leaves IAF, Joins Goa-Based Airline FLY91 as Commercial Pilot
New Delhi: Former Indian Air Force Group Captain Abhinandan Varthaman has left the IAF and joined Goa-based regional airline FLY91 as a commercial pilot, according to sources.
The Veer Chakra awardee reportedly joined the airline in August. The reason behind his departure from the Air Force has not been disclosed.
Abhinandan Became Famous After 2019 Air Combat
Abhinandan came into the national spotlight following the 2019 aerial engagement with Pakistan. During the confrontation, he shot down a Pakistani F-16 fighter jet.
His aircraft was subsequently brought down and he was captured in Pakistan. He was released and returned to India three days later.
Awarded Veer Chakra in 2021
In 2021, Abhinandan was awarded the Veer Chakra, India’s third-highest wartime gallantry award.
The award citation recognised his exceptional courage and devotion to duty during the aerial engagement.
FLY91 Operations
FLY91, a Goa-based regional airline, began commercial operations in March 2024. The airline currently operates a fleet of six ATR 72-600 aircraft and has operating bases in Goa and Hyderabad.
An airline spokesperson declined to comment, saying information related to employees is a private matter. Further details about Abhinandan’s role with the airline are not yet available.
