Bharat Taxi begins operations in Chandigarh
Chandigarh, September 18, 2026: Bharat Taxi, a cooperative-based cab service, was formally launched in Chandigarh on Friday, marking its entry into the city’s technology-driven mobility sector. The service was launched at an event organised by the Department of Cooperation, Chandigarh Administration, with Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria as the chief guest. Union Ministers of State Murlidhar Mohol and Krishan Pal Gurjar also attended the event.
Drivers to be members and stakeholders
Bharat Taxi combines cooperative ownership with digital technology, allowing drivers to participate as members and stakeholders rather than only as service providers. During the launch, an audio-visual presentation on the cooperative model and key features of the service was screened. Share certificates were also distributed to five driver-members. Kataria digitally inaugurated the service and flagged off Bharat Taxi vehicles, formally starting operations in Chandigarh.
Focus on affordable and reliable mobility
Addressing the gathering, Kataria said the initiative would promote dignity of labour, cooperative ownership, technological self-reliance and inclusive growth. He said Bharat Taxi could provide citizens with a safe, affordable and reliable mobility option while complementing Chandigarh’s existing public transport system. He also called for transparent operations, data security, fair fares, effective grievance redressal and greater use of electric vehicles.
Expansion planned across Punjab
Bharat Taxi also plans to expand its services to other Punjab cities, including Amritsar, Ludhiana and Jalandhar, in the coming months.
Senior Chandigarh Administration officials, Bharat Taxi representatives, cooperative-sector members and driver-members attended the launch.
