Impact of Delhi’s New EV Policy: Electric Two-Wheeler Registrations Rise 30% in Three Months
Electric two-wheeler registrations in Delhi increased by 30% during the first three months after the implementation of the new Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy. The policy came into effect on July 1, and its impact became visible during the July-September quarter. Compared with the April-June quarter, electric two-wheeler registrations rose by 30%.Other electric vehicle segments also recorded growth. Registrations of electric four-wheeler goods vehicles increased by 83%, electric cars by 27% and electric three-wheelers by 18%. 30% Electrification Target by 2030
The Delhi EV Policy 2030 aims to make at least 30% of the city’s total vehicle fleet electric by 2030. Since two-wheelers account for around two-thirds of Delhi’s vehicle fleet, the policy places special emphasis on this segment. It also provides for a complete ban on the registration of new petrol and diesel two-wheelers from April 2028.For electric two-wheelers priced up to ₹2.25 lakh ex-showroom, the subsidy is ₹10,000 per kWh in the first year, capped at ₹30,000. In the second year, it will be ₹6,600 per kWh, capped at ₹20,000, while in the third year it will be ₹3,300 per kWh, capped at ₹10,000.
Focus on Charging Infrastructure
The Delhi government is also working to expand charging infrastructure and reduce range anxiety among EV users. A total of 505 sites were identified, of which 382 have been approved by the Ministry of Heavy Industries. These sites have also been assessed separately for two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four-wheelers.Delhi Transco Limited (DTL) has been assigned responsibility for planning, coordinating and implementing charging and battery-swapping infrastructure. The government has brought KPMG on board as the Project Management Unit (PMU). According to the government, tenders for 160 to 180 high-readiness charging sites will soon be issued under the first phase.
