Delhi Metro records highest-ever daily boardings
New Delhi, September 19: The Delhi Metro recorded its highest-ever single-day passenger boardings on September 17, with 82,44,903 boardings, as the contractual Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) drivers’ strike entered its fourth day. According to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the latest figure surpassed the previous record of 81,88,115 boardings, recorded on August 8, 2025, by 56,788. It was also higher than the 81,01,159 boardings recorded on August 27 this year.
Metro demand rises sharply
The increase was particularly noticeable over a 24-hour period. The Metro recorded 80,71,630 boardings on September 16, meaning the September 17 figure was more than 1.7 lakh higher. The rise came amid the DTC contractual drivers’ strike, which is linked to demands including higher wages, medical benefits and social security provisions. While the timing shows a clear overlap between the strike and the Metro’s record ridership, the available figures do not establish exactly how many commuters shifted from buses to the Metro.
DMRC adds extra trains
To manage the additional passenger load, the DMRC increased train services. On September 16, the corporation added 20 additional train trips across its network and operated eight extra trains according to operational requirements. The enhanced arrangement continued on September 17, with eight additional trains deployed between 8 am and 8 pm, particularly during peak hours.
Yellow Line sees highest boardings
Among individual corridors, the Yellow Line recorded 20,89,465 boardings, the highest among the Metro lines. It was followed by the Blue Line with 17,28,658 boardings. The Pink Line recorded 9,41,527 boardings, while the Red Line registered 8,80,059. The overall figure also includes passenger usage on other sections of the Delhi Metro network, including the Airport Express Line and Gurugram’s Rapid Metro. The latest record highlights the Metro’s importance as a high-capacity alternative when road-based public transport faces disruption. However, the figures represent passenger boardings and not unique passengers, as a commuter can generate multiple boardings while making a journey involving transfers.
