Tight security arrangements at Bharat Mandapam
New Delhi: Security has been tightened at Bharat Mandapam as India prepares to host the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12-13. Dog squads and other security measures have been deployed at the venue ahead of the high-level gathering. The Delhi Police has mobilised more than 15,000 personnel, while around 200 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) have been deployed for security, law and order and other operational duties. Special Commissioner of Police (Security) Manish Agarwal said the arrangements have been made in coordination with the Ministry of Home Affairs.
BRICS Summit to focus on cooperation and resilience
The theme of this year's summit is “Building Resilience for Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainable Development.” BRICS currently comprises 11 countries — Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the UAE.
India is a founding member of BRICS and has previously held the grouping's chairship in 2012, 2016 and 2021.
Focus on global economic and strategic issues
BRICS has become an important platform for cooperation among major emerging economies. Its agenda covers areas such as development, finance, technology, trade and people-to-people exchanges.
India's current chairship comes amid global economic uncertainty, technological disruption, geopolitical tensions, climate challenges and pressure on resources. The expanded grouping is expected to discuss cooperation in areas including development, climate action, technology, energy and financial resilience.
PM Modi highlights secure trade routes
Ahead of the summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed the importance of secure sea lanes, open supply routes and the safety of seafarers for the growth of global trade.
Addressing the BRICS Business Forum 2026, Modi said BRICS countries account for around 50% of the world's population, 40% of global GDP and more than 25% of global trade.
