Centre Approves Procurement of Copra and Totapuri Mangoes in Tamil Nadu to Support Farmers
New Delhi: In a major relief for farmers in Tamil Nadu, the Centre has approved the procurement of copra and Totapuri mangoes to ensure fair prices for growers and protect them from distress sales caused by market fluctuations.
The Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare said the decision was taken following a proposal submitted by the Tamil Nadu government. The move aims to improve price realisation for farmers while providing stability in the agricultural market.
Under the approval, more than 87,000 metric tonnes of copra will be procured in the state under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). The total value of the approved procurement exceeds ₹1,000 crore, offering significant financial support to copra farmers.
In addition, the Centre has approved the procurement of over 96,000 metric tonnes of Totapuri mangoes during the current season under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS).
The procurement of Totapuri mangoes will be carried out at a Market Intervention Price (MIP) of over ₹1,000 per quintal. The initiative is intended to protect mango growers from sudden price crashes and ensure they receive fair and remunerative returns for their produce.
According to the ministry, the intervention will help stabilise market prices, safeguard farmers' incomes, and prevent losses resulting from volatile market conditions.
The approval for large-scale procurement of both copra and Totapuri mangoes, along with MSP-backed support exceeding ₹1,000 crore for copra, is expected to strengthen the rural economy and boost farmers' confidence. The government said such measures play an important role in enhancing agricultural incomes and supporting the overall growth of the farm sector.
