The ongoing scientific desiltation of Chandigarh's iconic Sukhna Lake is set to enhance the wetland's water-holding capacity by approximately 5.4 hectare-metres, marking a significant step toward its long-term ecological sustainability.
The development was reviewed during the 5th meeting of the Wetland Authority, Chandigarh, chaired by Punjab Governor and UT Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria. The meeting focused on assessing the progress of conservation initiatives and scientific management practices aimed at preserving the nationally protected Sukhna Wetland.
During the meeting, the Administrator directed all stakeholder departments to work in close coordination to protect the wetland ecosystem, strengthen biodiversity conservation, and ensure the sustainable management of the lake.
Special attention was also given to the status of migratory birds visiting the wetland. Gulab Chand Kataria instructed the concerned departments to identify suitable measures for improving habitat quality so that a larger variety and population of migratory birds can be attracted in the coming years.
Scientific desiltation plays a crucial role in removing accumulated sediment from the lake bed, thereby increasing its water storage capacity, improving water quality, reducing flood risks, and supporting aquatic biodiversity. The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the environmental health of one of Chandigarh's most treasured natural landmarks.
