Is your folded pillow affecting your sleep?
A pillow should support your head and neck without forcing them into an uncomfortable position. However, some people fold their pillow or use multiple pillows to increase its height, especially while watching their phone in bed. If the pillow becomes too high, it can push the head and neck forward and disturb normal alignment. This may contribute to neck stiffness, shoulder discomfort and back pain, particularly when the position is maintained for several hours.
Neck stiffness and discomfort
An excessively high or folded pillow can place the neck in an awkward position during sleep. Staying in this position for hours may leave you with neck stiffness, soreness or difficulty moving the neck after waking. People who already have neck or cervical problems may need more personalised pillow support from a healthcare professional.
Back and spine alignment
Your sleeping position can affect the alignment of your head, neck and spine. A pillow that is too high may alter this alignment, particularly for people who sleep on their back or side. The result can be discomfort in the upper back, shoulders or lower back. However, a folded pillow does not automatically cause conditions such as a slipped disc; persistent or severe pain should be medically evaluated.
What about breathing and snoring?
Pillow height can also influence head and neck positioning during sleep. In some people, an unsuitable sleeping position may affect the upper airway and potentially worsen snoring.
People with sleep apnoea or persistent nighttime breathing problems should not rely on changing pillow height as a treatment and should seek medical advice.
Numbness in the shoulder or arm
Sleeping in the same position for a long time can put pressure on certain nerves or blood vessels. An unsuitable pillow may also contribute to shoulder discomfort. If you regularly wake up with persistent numbness, tingling or weakness in an arm or hand, it is better to consult a doctor rather than simply changing the pillow.
How to choose the right pillow
There is no single pillow height that works for everyone. The right pillow depends on your sleeping position, body shape and the firmness of the mattress. The main aim is to keep your head and neck in a comfortable, neutral position rather than bending the neck sharply upward or downward.
Side sleepers generally need more support than stomach sleepers, while back sleepers usually need moderate support. If folding your pillow makes your neck feel strained, consider using a pillow designed to provide the required height without creating an excessive angle.
