Govt Makes Aadhaar Biometric Authentication Mandatory For Subsidised Refills Of LPG Cylinders From 1st Oct

By NewsWave Desk20 Sept 2026, 11:10 am115 views

Biometric Aadhaar authentication will be mandatory for subsidised LPG refills from October 1, 2026. Check who needs it and how to complete authentication.

Domestic LPG consumers will need to complete Biometric Aadhaar Authentication (BAA) to book subsidised refills at the regulated Retail Selling Price (RSP) with applicable subsidy from October 1, 2026, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has said.

The government says the measure is aimed at making LPG subsidy delivery more targeted and ensuring that subsidised cooking gas reaches genuine beneficiaries. Consumers who have already completed the authentication process will not have to do it again.

27.43 crore consumers already covered

According to the Petroleum Ministry, 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers, or 89.9% of the total, had completed Biometric Aadhaar Authentication as of September 19. These consumers do not need to take any further action.

The government has been carrying out the authentication drive through Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to improve beneficiary identification and remove duplicate or ineligible connections.

Why is Aadhaar authentication being introduced?

The ministry says linking an LPG connection with an Aadhaar-authenticated consumer will help prevent the diversion of subsidised domestic cylinders for commercial and industrial use.

It is also expected to help identify duplicate and ineligible connections and make subsidy delivery more transparent and targeted. The government has clarified that the process is not intended to deny LPG to genuine households.

Consumers who have not completed authentication can still obtain LPG, but authentication is required to access subsidised refills at the regulated price from October 1.

How can consumers complete authentication?

Consumers who are yet to complete the process have several options. Biometric Aadhaar Authentication can be completed:

  • At the time of LPG delivery

  • At the LPG distributor's showroom

  • Through the mobile apps of Oil Marketing Companies

The OMC apps include IndianOil ONE for Indane, HelloBPCL for Bharatgas and HP PAY for HP Gas.

Consumers urged to complete the process before October 1

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry has urged consumers who have not yet completed Biometric Aadhaar Authentication to do so before October 1, 2026, to continue receiving subsidised LPG refills at the regulated selling price.
