Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel reviewed the flood situation in Surat on Thursday following heavy rainfall that caused waterlogging in several parts of the city. The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil, officials, and local representatives.
After the review meeting, Harsh Sanghavi praised the people of Surat and relief agencies for working together during the flood situation.
Sanghavi said that heavy rainfall on July 7 created a serious flood-like situation in several areas of Surat, which experienced one of the highest rainfall events in recent years. He added that residents supported government agencies during the challenging period.
Several areas faced severe waterlogging, prompting rescue and relief operations by NDRF, SDRF, and other agencies. Teams worked to evacuate and relocate affected residents to safer locations.
Sanghavi informed that Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has announced a ₹500 crore project to prevent creek water from entering Surat city and to strengthen flood management infrastructure.
Valsad BJP MP Dhaval Patel said that the Chief Minister chaired a high-level meeting with district officials and public representatives to assess flood damage and discuss long-term measures for preventing similar incidents in South Gujarat.
He said that low-lying areas of Surat, Navsari, and Valsad witnessed waterlogging due to heavy rainfall, causing damage to several properties. The state government has assured that necessary steps will be taken to improve flood preparedness.
Earlier, NDRF teams rescued 85 people from Sriram Nagar Society in Surat, including 36 men, 27 women, and 22 children, following the flooding.
Several parts of Surat continue to recover from the impact of heavy rainfall and flooding, while authorities remain focused on relief work and preventive measures.
