Bhubaneswar: Vice President C P Radhakrishnan on Thursday launched a landmark national initiative aimed at the sustainable utilisation of India’s high-seas fishery resources at Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) in Bhubaneswar.
The initiative marks a major step towards promoting responsible deep-sea fishing and marine resource conservation. During the event, the Vice President inaugurated the national rollout of Letters of Authorisation for Indian-flagged fishing vessels operating in distant waters.
He also unveiled the Odisha Deep Sea Fishing Mission Document, a strategic roadmap designed to strengthen the state’s deep-sea fishing ecosystem and expand opportunities under India’s Blue Economy.
Highlighting the importance of the maritime sector, the Vice President said that the Blue Economy can become a transformative engine for national prosperity. He encouraged young Indians to adopt modern, technology-driven fisheries and maritime professions as promising career opportunities.
C P Radhakrishnan emphasised the need for digital authorisation systems, vessel tracking technologies and globally recognised certification standards to ensure sustainable fishing practices.
He noted that India’s seafood exports have crossed ₹73,000 crore and now reach more than 120 countries. He said a strong and sustainable Blue Economy would play a crucial role in achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
The initiative is expected to strengthen India’s position in global fisheries while ensuring responsible conservation of marine resources.
