India and New Zealand are celebrating the completion of 100 years of sporting ties in 2026, with hockey continuing to serve as a strong symbol of friendship between the two countries.
The sporting relationship between the two nations began in 1926 when the Indian Army Hockey Team became the first Indian sports team to tour New Zealand. The historic squad included legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, making the tour one of the most memorable moments in Indian hockey history.
A century later, hockey continues to bring India and New Zealand closer. The bond was further strengthened earlier this year when the Indian Women’s Hockey Team defeated hosts New Zealand in the final to win the FIH Women’s Nations Cup in Auckland.
Former Hockey New Zealand CEO and 1976 Olympic Gold Medallist Ramesh Patel said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit would further enhance sports cooperation and strengthen the relationship between the two nations.
Over the past 100 years, hockey has remained more than just a sport between India and New Zealand. It has become a bridge of friendship, connecting players, fans, and communities across both countries.
As both nations celebrate this historic milestone, the century-old hockey connection continues to inspire future generations and promote stronger sporting partnerships.
