ISRO Successfully Conducts Three Critical Gaganyaan Crew Module Tests
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has achieved another significant milestone in the Gaganyaan Human Spaceflight Programme by successfully conducting three critical tests of the Crew Module systems.
The first test validated the Crew Module Uprighting System, a vital safety mechanism designed to ensure that the crew module automatically returns to an upright position after splashdown in the sea. The system uses stored cold-gas technology and plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of astronauts during post-landing recovery operations.
The second test focused on the separation of the umbilical mechanism connecting the Crew Module, which houses the astronauts, with the Service Module that provides power and propulsion. The mechanism comprises two units—CSU-1 and CSU-2. During the mission, CSU-1 disconnects to separate the service module from the crew module, while CSU-2 separates just before atmospheric re-entry. ISRO successfully demonstrated the clean separation of CSU-2 using a simulated crew module, confirming structural stability and interface integrity.
The third test successfully validated the structural integrity of the Crew Module during the separation of the Apex Cover. The Apex Cover protects the parachute system throughout the mission and is jettisoned before parachute deployment, enabling the safe descent and landing of the crew module.
These successful tests represent another important step toward the Gaganyaan mission, India's first human spaceflight programme, reinforcing ISRO's commitment to ensuring astronaut safety through rigorous testing and advanced engineering.
