CHANDIGARH /AMRITSAR, July 10:

In a major breakthrough amidst the ongoing drive to make Punjab a drug free state as per directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Amritsar Commissionerate Police has busted a cross-border narcotics smuggling network with the arrest of two individuals, including one juvenile, and recovered 8.378 kg heroin along with ₹2 lakh drug money from their possession, said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav here on Friday.

Those arrested have been identified as Lovepreet Singh alias Love (28), a resident of village Khasa in Amritsar and one juvenile.

DGP Gaurav Yadav said that preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused were operating on the directions of a cross-border smuggler and were involved in collecting heroin consignments from different locations for further delivery across the state.

The DGP said that further investigation is underway to establish forward and backward linkages in this case to identify all associates involved, and dismantle the entire supply chain.

Sharing operational details, Commissioner of Police (CP) Amristar Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that acting on reliable intelligence, police teams apprehended accused Lovepreet alias Love along with his juvenile accomplice and initially, 2 kg heroin was recovered from their possession. During further investigation and based on the disclosure statement of the apprehended juvenile, police teams further recovered 3.01 kg heroin along with ₹2 lakh drug money, taking the total recovery in the case to 5.01 kg, he said.

The CP said that from forward and backward linkages of this case, it came to the light that the same cross-border smuggler has been operating another smuggling module.

Acting swiftly on the intelligence developed during the investigation, police teams conducted a targeted operation and recovered an additional 3.368 kg heroin from a pinpointed location, he said, while adding that two more accused have been identified and nominated in a separate case.

In this regard, two separate cases— FIR No. 145 dated 29.06.2026 under sections 21, 21-C, 25 and 29 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Chheharta and FIR No. 199 dated 03.07.2026 under sections 21 and 29 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Islamabad— have been registered.
