No Animal Suffers in Heat’: Chhatbir Zoo Launches Intensive Summer Care Drive

Chhatbir Zoo Strengthens Summer Care Measures to Protect Wildlife Keeping in view the intense summer heat and its commitment towards the well-being of animals, the Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park (Chhatbir Zoo) has put in place extensive arrangements to ensure the safety and comfort of wildlife during the harsh weather conditions. Under the guidance and vision of Forests and Wildlife Preservation Minister Mr. Lal Chand Kataruchak, the zoo management has implemented a series of special measures aimed at protecting different categories of animals from extreme heat. Special Care for Carnivores To provide relief to carnivorous animals, desert coolers and air-circulator fans have been installed in the night shelters of tigers, lions, leopards, bears, and other feline and canine species. The animal management cell remains on high alert round the clock to ensure that all enclosures and shelters stay cool, dry, and comfortable. In addition, windows have been fitted with mesh screens to maintain a mosquito-free environment. Several enclosure areas have also been covered with 75 percent density agro-net to reduce surrounding temperatures and provide adequate shade. Tankers and tractors remain on standby at all times to ensure uninterrupted water supply across the zoo in case of emergencies. Protection Measures for Herbivores For herbivorous animals, temporary shelters and huts made from kanna (Saccharum munja), bamboo, and wooden logs have been created to shield them from heat strokes and direct sunlight. Special muddy shallow pools filled with water have been developed in the enclosures of elephants, Manipur deer, swamp deer, and the deer safari area to facilitate mud baths and cooling activities. Concrete water pools are also being continuously refilled to maintain round-the-clock water availability. To enhance the cooling effect, selected patches within these enclosures have also been covered with 75 percent density agro-net. Enhanced Comfort for Birds The zoo has also taken significant steps for the protection of birds during the summer season. Bird cages and aviaries have been tightly covered with 75 percent density agro-net and jute mats to shield them from hot winds and harsh sunlight. Additionally, sprinkler showers have been installed in pheasantry sections and smaller aviaries to keep birds cool, comfortable, and stress-free during the ongoing heatwave. The comprehensive summer management plan reflects Chhatbir Zoo’s continued dedication towards wildlife conservation and animal welfare amid rising temperatures.
