Twenty medical students from Sweden are at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) for a two-week elective posting in the Department of Pediatrics and the School of Public Health. The group is accompanied by three faculty members from Region Skane, Sweden: Dr. Christian Penno, Dr. Viktor Peny, and Dr. Ioannis Orfanos.
The delegation began its visit with courtesy calls on the Director, PGI, Dr. (Prof.) Vivek Lal, and the Academic Dean, PGI, Dr. (Prof.) Sanjay Jain. The exchange is being coordinated by Prof. Praveen Kumar, Head, Department of Pediatrics; Dr. (Prof.) Arun Bansal, Additional Medical Superintendent, PGI; and Dr. (Prof.) Arun Aggarwal, Head, School of Public Health. Throughout this first week, the visiting students and faculty are exchanging knowledge with faculty and residents of the Department of Pediatrics and the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases.
This goodwill knowledge-exchange programme began after Dr. Sanjay Verma, Professor, Pediatric Infectious Diseases, PGI, visited Helsingborg Hospital and Lund University, Sweden, several years ago. The visit has since grown into a recurring exchange between the two institutions.
As part of the exchange, the three visiting faculty members delivered academic talks to residents and faculty at PGI. Dr. Christian Penno, Senior Consultant and Pediatrician at Helsingborg Hospital, Region Skane, and Board Member of the Swedish Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, spoke on "An Introduction to Swedish Healthcare, Sweden and Lund." Dr. Viktor Peny, Pediatrician at Skane University Hospital and a PhD candidate at Lund University, spoke on "Hypoxemia and the Risk of Complicated Pneumonia in Children." Dr. Ioannis Orfanos, Senior Consultant, Pediatrician, and Associate Professor, Director of the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Emergency Medicine, and Social Pediatrics, spoke on "Management of Febrile Infants: Challenges and Perspectives."
The visiting students and faculty expressed sincere thanks for the warm welcome extended to them at the institute and for the opportunity to expand their clinical knowledge. They noted their admiration for the academic curriculum followed by residents at PGI and for the standard of patient care provided at the institute.
