Swine Flu Cases Rise in Punjab, Health Minister Says Situation Under Control
Chandigarh, August 25, 2026: Punjab has reported a rise in swine flu (H1N1) cases in recent days amid an increase in viral infections. However, Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh has said there is no need to panic and the situation remains fully under control.
According to the Health Minister, swine flu cases remained in single digits every month from January to July this year, with no month recording 10 or more cases. In comparison, around 70 cases have been reported so far in August.
No New H1N1 Variant Detected
Dr Balbir Singh said no new variant of the virus has been detected among the current cases. He described the virus as an existing and relatively mild variant.
According to him, no patient has so far developed a serious condition or required hospitalisation.
Patients are being tested and, where required, given medication before being advised to recover at home.
Rainy Season Linked to Rise in Viral Infections
The Health Minister attributed the recent increase in viral infections partly to the rainy season. Increased humidity during this period can contribute to the spread of viral illnesses, he said.
He added that several other parts of the country, including Delhi, have also reported a rise in viral infections during the same period.
Precautions Advised for High-Risk Groups
Dr Balbir Singh said healthy people generally do not need to be particularly concerned.
However, pregnant women, young children, elderly people and those with serious conditions such as cancer or diabetes have been advised to avoid crowded places and wear masks when necessary.
H1N1 Testing and Treatment Available at Government Hospitals
The Health Minister said government hospitals across Punjab have facilities for H1N1 testing, medicines and treatment.
He urged people not to pay attention to rumours and advised residents to follow necessary precautions while continuing with their normal daily activities.
