Akali Dal protests over power cuts
Mohali, September 16, 2026: The Shiromani Akali Dal staged a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Mohali on Wednesday over prolonged power cuts and irregular electricity supply in Punjab. The protest was led by Akali Dal Mohali Halqa In-charge and District President Parvinder Singh Sohana, along with party leaders and workers. Sohana said prolonged power cuts were causing difficulties for residents, farmers and industrialists. He claimed that irregular electricity supply was also affecting industrial production and causing financial losses to businesses.
Five demands put forward
The Akali Dal submitted a five-point list of demands, including:
Immediate end to prolonged power cuts in villages and industrial areas.
Advance publication of power-cut schedules for different areas.
Uninterrupted electricity supply to industrial feeders.
Immediate replacement of faulty transformers and power lines.
A relief mechanism for consumers and industries affected by power cuts.
Sohana also demanded daily district-level public reports showing power cuts and the actual electricity supply position.
Effigy of CM Bhagwant Mann burnt
During the protest, party workers also burnt an effigy of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The protesters later submitted a memorandum containing their demands to Nikhil Arora, District Programme Officer, Mohali. Party leaders, including Bibi Paramjit Kaur Landran, Sukhwinder Singh Shindi, Sarbjit Singh Paras, Advocate Sukhbir Singh Gill and Harjit Singh CA, alleged that prolonged power cuts were causing serious inconvenience to people, farmers and industries.
