PU Senate elections begin across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh, with 51 candidates contesting 15 Registered Graduates seats.

Voting for the Panjab University Senate elections began on Sunday, with voters turning up in large numbers at polling centres across Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi and Chandigarh.

The election is being held for the Registered Graduates Constituency, which elects 15 Ordinary Fellows to the university’s Senate, the top governing body of Panjab University. Voters from different age groups were seen waiting in queues at polling stations from the morning.

A total of 51 candidates are contesting for 15 seats, making the election a closely contested multi-cornered battle. Thousands of graduates whose names appear on the final electoral roll are eligible to vote.

Security arrangements at polling centres

The university administration has established polling centres at selected colleges and schools across different districts. Voters have been asked to carry valid identity documents before casting their ballots.

University security personnel and police teams have also been deployed around the polling stations to ensure orderly voting and maintain security throughout the process.

Why the Senate election matters

The Panjab University Senate has an important role in the university's administration and policy-making. Issues related to academic affairs, financial matters and the interests of teachers and students are dealt with through the university's governing bodies.

The Senate election is being conducted in different stages for various categories, including teaching departments, affiliated colleges and professors.

When will the PU Senate election results be announced?

Once voting ends on Sunday evening, the ballot boxes will be transported under security to the Gymnasium Hall at Panjab University’s Sector 14 campus in Chandigarh.

According to the election schedule, counting will begin at 9:30 am on September 23, after which the results will be formally announced.
