A large number of farmers gathered in Chandigarh on Friday and started a protest march from Sector-34 to Matka Chowk against the India-US trade agreement and Punjab’s new land pooling policy.
The protest was organised under the banner of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan), with farmers first holding a demonstration at Sector-34 before moving towards Matka Chowk.
In view of the protest, heavy police deployment was made in Chandigarh, while traffic movement was affected in several areas due to the march.
Farmer leader Joginder Singh Ugrahan said that if the India-US trade agreement is implemented, farmers as well as small traders would suffer major losses. He demanded that the agreement should not be implemented under any circumstances.
Ugrahan also demanded that the Punjab government withdraw the new land pooling policy, stating that farmers had already made their opposition clear.
Speaking about rising prices, the farmer leader said that relief should be provided to people affected by inflation amid global tensions, including the conflict between the United States and Iran.
He added that small traders and labourers should also join the movement to raise their concerns.
The protest march continued from Sector-34 towards Matka Chowk, with authorities monitoring the situation to maintain law and order.
