Chandigarh Congress Organises ‘Sugar Langar’, 1-Kg Packets Distributed Free

Chandigarh, August 26, 2026: The Chandigarh Congress organised a ‘Sugar Langar’ at Congress Bhawan in Sector 35, where free 1-kg packets of sugar were distributed as part of a protest against rising prices of essential commodities.

A large number of people reached the venue to collect the sugar packets. The crowd reportedly led to some scuffles, with a few packets also being torn during the distribution.

The packets being distributed at the event also carried the Congress election symbol.

Congress Plans to Distribute 25 Tonnes of Sugar

Chandigarh Congress President HS Lucky said around 25 tonnes of sugar are planned to be distributed under the programme.

According to Lucky, each bag contains 50 packets of 1 kg each. At present, 15 bags, or around 750 kg of sugar, have been brought to the venue for distribution.

The programme is being presented by the Congress as a protest against the rising prices of sugar and other essential food items.

HS Lucky Raises Issue of Rising Sugar Prices

HS Lucky claimed that sugar prices have increased by around ₹15 to ₹20 per kg at several places in recent times.

He alleged that the government has not taken adequate measures to control inflation. According to the Congress, the rising cost of essential food items is putting additional pressure on the household budgets of ordinary families.

The party said the Sugar Langar was organised to highlight the issue of inflation and draw attention to the impact of rising food prices on consumers.

Crowd Gathers at Sector 35 Venue

The free distribution attracted a significant crowd at Congress Bhawan in Sector 35. The rush reportedly resulted in some arguments and scuffles among people waiting to collect the packets.

The distribution programme continued amid the gathering, while the Congress maintained that the initiative was aimed at highlighting the impact of rising prices.

Note: Claims regarding the rise in sugar prices and the planned distribution of 25 tonnes of sugar are based on statements attributed to Chandigarh Congress President HS Lucky.
