Voting begins for Delhi University student union polls
New Delhi, September 18, 2026: Voting for the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections began on Friday amid tight security, with more than 2,000 police and paramilitary personnel deployed across the university campus. Polling is being held for four central posts — president, vice-president, secretary and joint secretary. Students attending daytime classes can vote from 8:30 am to 1 pm, while those enrolled in evening classes can cast their votes between 3 pm and 7:30 pm.
Security tightened across campuses
Police have made extensive security arrangements around colleges and other key locations to ensure peaceful polling and maintain law and order. Foot patrol teams, motorcycle squads and PCR vehicles are conducting regular rounds around the campus. Paramilitary personnel have also been deployed at important and sensitive locations.NSecurity has been increased around polling stations to regulate movement, prevent overcrowding and avoid any untoward incidents.
Major student groups in contest
The election features candidates from major student organisations, including the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and the AISA-SFI alliance. In the 2025 election, ABVP won three of the four central posts, including the president’s post, while NSUI won the vice-president’s position.
Counting to be held on September 19
Traffic restrictions have also been imposed on some key roads around the university during the polling and counting process. Vote counting will take place on Saturday, September 19, at the multipurpose hall of the University Sports Stadium in North Campus. Police personnel will remain deployed during counting to maintain security and ensure peaceful declaration of results.
