Punjab Govt vs Employees: 2,500 Names on List After Strike Absence; What Action Could Follow?

Chandigarh, August 29: The standoff between the Punjab government and its government employees appears to be intensifying, with the government reportedly preparing a list of around 2,500 employees who remained absent from duty on August 27 and participated in the strike.

According to government sources, the employees allegedly did not have a valid reason for their absence. The government is now considering action under applicable service rules.

What action could employees face?

Officials may consider measures ranging from suspension and forced leave to salary cuts and other departmental action, depending on the applicable service rules and individual cases.

The final decision, however, would depend on the relevant procedures and examination of the employees' cases.

Employees launch digital protest

The employees, meanwhile, have also indicated that they are not prepared to back down.

A digital strike against Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has reportedly been launched, with employees using social media platforms including Facebook and X to register their protest.

What happens next?

The situation has now developed into a direct standoff, with the government preparing for possible action against employees who were absent during the strike while employees continue their protest through digital platforms.

The next major question is whether the government proceeds with disciplinary action against the employees on the list or whether both sides find a way to break the deadlock.
