Raja Warring Breaks Silence on Punjab Congress Rift: 'Some May Have Issues With Me, But I'm Not a Failed President
CHANDIGARH: Amid growing factionalism within the Punjab Congress, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) President Amrinder Singh Raja Warring has broken his silence to defend his leadership. Warring stated that while certain party leaders may have personal or political differences with him, his primary focus remains on resolving internal discord and uniting disgruntled elements.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with a private television channel, Warring strongly rejected assertions that he has failed to manage the state unit effectively. “I am not a failed president. I have always performed well in my role. It is possible that some people may not like me, because you simply cannot keep everyone happy all the time,” Warring asserted.
Addressing the speculative reports surrounding a potential leadership overhaul, Warring made it clear that he serves at the pleasure of the party's central leadership. He stated that if the Congress high command decides to appoint a new Punjab Congress chief, he would welcome the decision wholeheartedly. He further promised to make every possible effort to reconcile and bring back leaders who are currently unhappy with the state leadership.
The internal rift within the Punjab Congress has become increasingly visible, splitting the state unit into two distinct camps—one led by former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and the other by Raja Warring and his loyalists. This divide widened significantly following the high command’s recent announcements regarding the key organizational posts of state president and Leader of the Opposition (LoP).
Although the high command attempted to strike a balance by appointing Channi as the Chairman of the Campaign Committee for the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections, dissatisfaction persists. A significant section of Channi’s supporters firmly believes that the former Chief Minister should have been handed the reins of the Punjab Congress presidency instead.
To defuse the escalating crisis and restore organizational unity, Congress’ Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel is currently stationed in the state. Baghel has been holding a series of back-to-back meetings with various state leaders.
According to party sources, Baghel is scheduled to hold a crucial high-stakes meeting on Saturday with prominent leaders aligned with the Channi faction. The meeting is expected to be attended by former Chief Minister and MP Charanjit Singh Channi, MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, MLA Pargat Singh, senior leader Bharat Bhushan Ashu, alongside several other influential Congress leaders from the Majha region.
